26). My
Grandmother's Kindergarten Pupil
Wing,
North Dakota (October 2001)
The most amazing event of my trip around
America occurred in the small town of Wing, North Dakota, where I met an 87-year old woman named Hester Bailey
who, as I learned, was my grandmother's kindergarten pupil in 1921.
Hester (left) not only remembered my grandmother and mother, but she's
probably the only person alive who remembers my great-grandparents, all of
whom are now gone. Hester is delightfully spry and we still
keep in touch. In fact, she recently sent me a huge colorful quilt
that she made, along with some handmade potholders.
