Lawrence
Elk
Olympic
National Park,
Washington (June 2002)
After returning to the U.S. in April, I
spent a few months getting ready for my second trip around America, then I
took off. One of my first stops was at Hoh campground, nestled in
Washington's
Olympic rain forest. One morning while eating breakfast there, I had a
close encounter of the Elk kind. Apparently it was calving season and the Olympic
elk were pretty aggressive, including this one I called "Lawrence."
She charged at me several times, so for about 20 minutes I kept my truck
between us.
