75). The San Antonio School
San
Antonio, Belize (February 2008)
One of the most fulfilling experiences of my life was
volunteering for a week in the jungles of Belize in February 2008. Our group of 23 from
Portland worked with ProBelize,
an organization that's like a privately-run Peace Corps.
We spent our week working in two villages there. In Succotz, near the
Guatemalan border, we helped build a library foundation and in San Antonio,
we fixed up an elementary school. I was deeply humbled by my
experience in Belize -- the unbounded kindness of villagers, the oppressive
poverty, the incredible beauty and cultural heritage -- and received much more than I gave.
