Here are some photos and stories of the
ten days
I spent in my old stomping ground, Lake City, Colorado.
 Above
left: Getting ready for the big Fourth
of July parade in Lake City, Colorado.
Above
center: Fourth of July's don't get any better than this.
Above
right: Kids scrambling for candy.
 Above
left: Singing "YMCA."
Above
center: After the Lake City parade each year, there are "games in the
park." Here's the three-legged race.
Above
right: And yes, believe it or not, a shoe-kicking contest.
 Above
left: The street dance that night in
"downtown" Lake City.
Above
center: Lake San Cristobal, namesake of Lake City.
Above
right: The beautiful Lake Fork of the Gunnison River.
Above
left: Revisiting my old hangout at Rose's Cabin. This is at 11,000 feet.
Above
center: Lake City was the site of the Alferd Packer's massacre
back in the 1870s. Packer and three men headed into the mountains here
one winter... and three months later, only Packer emerged. Alferd (yep,
that's the way he spelled it) was the only person in the U.S. ever convicted of
cannibalism. He died in prison... supposedly, believe it or not, a
vegetarian.
Above
right: BLM rangers are dedicated, but apparently they can't spell too
well. Check out this "interpetive" site.
 Above
left: Restored cabin in Burrows Park.
Above
center: Shown on the previous page, this was American
Basin in 1987. American Basin is an alpine jewel and is one of the
reasons I worked here for six years.
Above
right: The same scene in 2002. Due to the prolonged
drought in Colorado, there wasn't any snow in the mountains.
 Above
left: The nearby Black Canyon of the
Gunnison is one of the deepest gorges in the U.S. It's absolutely
"gorgeous."
Above
center: Due to the nasty drought, Blue Mesa Reservoir was lower than
I've ever seen it.
Above
right: Site #12 in Williams Creek campground, my
home for 10 days.
 Above
left: Here are some old photos. These
are early prospectors near Silverton
in 1873.
Above
center: Eureka was a thriving company town back in 1920...
Above
right: ... but when the mine closed, the town moved out.
Here's the same scene, which I shot in 1984. Notice the scar on the
hillside from the old Sunnyside Mill.
 Above
left: Another "Before and
After." This is the Silver Lake Mill near Silverton in 1900.
Above
center: And the same scene in 1984, sans mill and railroad.
Above
right: The Lake Fork of the Gunnison River, a few miles
north of Lake City.

Left:
This is Silver Street in downtown Lake City. Unlike other
Colorado mountain towns, such as Aspen, Crested Butte and Telluride,
Lake City hasn't changed much in the last 100 years, and for that
I'm thankful. |
