My mother, who passed away a few years ago, once told me that her ancestors came from Norway in the 1800s and homesteaded near Webster, South Dakota.
Webster, therefore, was one of my prime destinations for my 2001 road trip. I spent a week there doing research and was able to piece together the story of my
great-great-grandparents, Ole and Birgit Svang. I was humbled to find their gravestone sitting on a windswept prairie a few
miles from their homestead.
