I flew to the Middle East again in 2009 for another mapping project. After working all week in Abu Dhabi, I rented a tiny car
and set off exploring the vast, desert country of Oman. I spent only three days in Oman but made the most of it, driving over a
thousand miles. Oman is a land of contrasts, with mountains over 10,000 feet high, long beaches, and vast sand dunes. During
my drive I spotted several camels, including this fellow standing beside the road. Very few Omanis I met spoke English, but they
were all warm and gracious to this lone American.
