I found this photo a few years ago, shortly after my mother passed away. It was in her mother Helga's photo album from the early 1900s. Of all
our old family photos, this one fascinated me the most: the look in Helga's eyes, the way my mom is squirming, the mysterious women sitting astride them,
and the team of horses harvesting the wheat. Where was this photo taken, why was my mother in a wheat field, and who were these other women, I wondered?
This photo, perhaps more than any other, compelled me to travel around America in 2001 and learn more about my family's history.
